Frequently Asked Questions ?

What is the project all about then?
The Class 37/4 Project's aims are to purchase, restore and operate a class 37/4 for the enjoyment of enthusiasts and the general public. We also want to raise awareness of the class as a whole during their final years.

What railway will you base the locomotive on?
A decision has not been made yet as to the future home of the locomotive but the committee will be contacting a number of railways in the near future to discuss the possibility of housing the locomotive there. Please contact either the Chairman or Secretary if you think you can help.

What locomotive do you hope you purchase?
The committee has deliberately agreed to remain non specific about any particular locomotive. A locomotive purchase based on a number of factors, namely condition, missing parts, restorability, engine hours. Obviously everyone has their favourite engine but we cannot be bribed either way!

How long do the 37/4's have in traffic?
According to sources it is likely that a small fleet will be maintained at Motherwell TMD for a number of contracts for the next few years.

Do you intend to take your locomotive onto the main line?
The answer is NO! The committee and none of our shareholders wish to see our prospective locomotive thrashed to pieces on the main line after spending hundred's of hours restoring it!

Why did you launch the project before you were ready?
The project was formally launched on Saturday 17th February 2001 after holding its inaugural meeting at the Stafford Arms. The committee believes we are ready to take on the challenges of purchasing and maintaining a locomotive. There is a common misconception that the project was launched back in November, it was not. A website was launched to gauge support and to raise the profile of the class 37/4's.

Why don't you offer membership?
We will be offering membership in the very near future. For more details please contact membership@class37project.co.uk.

Why don't you provide a contact postal address or phone number, I can only find an email address?
We will shortly be publishing a contact postal address in the very near future. With all correspondence posted to Committee members please provide a Stamped Addressed Envelope if a reply is required.

finally... what is better a Scottish or Welsh 37/4?
no comment... the project maintains an unbiased view!
